We are seeking a Postdoctoral Researcher to work within the framework of the European Project MIRIA (https://www.miriaproject.eu/) focused on the development, validation, and upscaling of novel surface coatings with antimicrobial functionalities.
The researcher will investigate the mechanical and durability properties of antiviral and antimicrobial coatings, focusing on their structural performance and reliability. In addition to mechanical characterization, the successful candidate will actively collaborate with biologists and microbiologists to support cell culture studies and antibacterial testing protocols.
This position offers the opportunity to contribute to cutting-edge research on surface engineering, combining material science and biomedical applications to address challenges in infection prevention and biomedical safety.
Doctoral Degree in Materials Science, Biomedical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related fields.
Essential:
- Proven expertise in surface engineering and coating technologies with a focus on antiviral and antimicrobial surfaces.
- Proficiency in mechanical characterization techniques, including nanoindentation, scratch testing, and wear testing for thin films and coatings.
- Ability to conduct durability tests for coatings following ISO protocols.
- Ability to conduct multiscale structural and mechanical characterizations using tools such as SEM, TEM, and AFM.
- Hands-on experience in collaborating with biological laboratories and conducting experiments related to cell cultures and antibacterial activity testing (e.g., biofilm resistance, zone of inhibition tests).
Desiderable:
- Familiarity with biomaterials and bio-compatible coatings for biomedical applications.
- Experience with antimicrobial testing standards, including ISO protocols for antibacterial activity evaluation.
- Proficiency in wet chemistry methods for functionalizing surfaces with antimicrobial agents.
- Background in corrosion testing and chemical resistance of coatings.
- Experience in collaborating within interdisciplinary teams, especially with biologists and microbiologists.
- Record of scientific publications in surface engineering, biomedical coatings, or antimicrobial materials.
